The boys’ track season is winding down.
The team has competed in 14+ meets this year and has won six of them.
With the six wins, they are averaging around 140.6 points a meet for the varsity team. In all their meets there are five events that they constantly win: shuttle hurdle relay, 4×200, 4×100, sprint medley relay and 4×800
Athletes set their own personal goals throughout the whole season.
“A couple of my goals to hit by the end of my high school career is to break one minute in the shuttle as a team and break 15 seconds in the high hurdles,” said junior Tyler Boldra
The Drake Relays is billed as America’s Athletic Classic and was held April 22-24. Junior Brock Sell, Senior Tyler Huey, Silas Bales, and Sophomore Cody Krause competed for GCHS in the 4×100 relay.
The relay team didn’t place at Drake, but now they focus on State and the Hawkeye-10 meet.
“I aim to get a team Hawkeye-Ten title and team district title,” said Bales “and medaling in all of the events that qualify for state.”
Head Coach Mark Starner is looking to take another team to State.
“We really focus on the team concept of scoring the most possible points as a team, that requires kids to buy in, and fortunately for us, they have,” said Starner. “I would say that we are getting productive efforts from all areas of our events, but we obviously have some specific areas that we need to improve on in the next couple of meets.”
Hawkeye-Ten championships May 13th at Glenwood.
