Spring sports are underway, meaning the boys’ golf team is back on the links. The Rams are looking forward to another strong year, after returning all but one starter from a team that did not drop a dual all season and felt they underperformed in a fifth-place finish in the conference meet last year, and an early exit in the sectional tournament.

Now the team is determined to make its first state appearance since 2006.

“ These guys see themselves as a state tournament caliber team,” said Head Coach Michael Joyner, who is in his fourth season with the Rams.

Junior golfer Ryan Leath, who won the conference individually as a freshman, is one golfer who sees the team at this level.

“Our goals for this season are to win the conference meet, as well as make it to the state tournament and do some damage there,” said Leath.

An optimistic junior golfer Eli Bales, who will be in his third year of varsity golf, also has lofty goals for the season. “We want to win the state tournament, baby. I believe we are going to show our dominance this year.”

Joyner sees one area of their game that could help the team reach those goals this season.

“We are mainly focused on the mental aspect of the game. We did a book study in January and February about the mental state of the golfer,” said Joyner. “We are now following the lead from that book and are finding it beneficial.”

In order to better themselves as golfers, the team has “mental toughness journals,” mentioned Joyner.

“Each of the top seven guys now has a mental toughness journal that they use to breakdown their round, figure out what is triggering certain types of responses and keep mentally engaged in a 4-6 hour round of golf,” said Joyner.

Leath believes the journals have made an impact. “The mental toughness journals have really helped by making us be more positive and think about the positive things instead of the negative things when we do something bad,” said Leath. “They have helped us be more prepared and focused on what we are trying to do.”

The Rams have a strong returning team but are still looking out for the tough field in the area.

“The pretty tough teams are always Atlantic and Carroll Kuemper, and Denison gave a strong run at the end of the year last year,” said Bales. “Then for sectionals, ADM is another strong group we have to get through.”

“They have the ability to play at a high level in 3A golf and their goal of playing in the state tournament and competing for a state championship is a great goal to have,” said Joyner.

“ I am excited to watch these guys grow in their ability on the golf course and in their mental toughness. I believe they have the will to win and the dedication. We’ll see how it plays out. ”
