Marvel’s latest installment in the MCU, “Black Panther,” hit theaters Friday, February 16, and has been breaking box office records since its release.

“Black Panther” takes place shortly after “Captain America: Civil War.” T’Challa, played by Chadwick Boseman, returns to his home country, Wakanda, after the death of his father to take up his father’s throne and become the new Black Panther. But problems arise when Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan, comes to Wakanda and challenges T’Challa’s reign as king, causing Wakanda to become divided and fall into civil war, sort of like “Captain America: Civil War”.

Overall, the movie was fantastic. Every actor gave an amazing performance, especially Michael B. Jordan. Jordan’s performance as Killmonger, who is probably one of Marvel’s strongest villains, is one of the best things about this movie. Killmonger provides everyone with a look into how progress can be dangerous, but still shows us the need for it.

“Black Panther” is an action packed, thrilling adventure full of awesome fight scenes, cool car chases, complicated characters, and interesting character arcs that entertain anyone from hardcore Marvel fans to people looking for a good movie.

Now I should probably mention that Wakanda isn’t your typical African Nation. As explained in the movie’s beginning scene, Wakanda is the richest and most technologically developed country in the world. They have spaceships, laser spears, cloaking devices and domesticated rhinos that they ride into battle.

The movie explains this as a result of the large amount of vibranium that the Wakandans possess. Vibranium is an indestructible metal that has appeared in previous Marvel movies. Long ago, a meteorite made of vibranium fell to earth and the Wakandans claimed it as their own. All of their buildings, clothing and weapons are made out it. The vibranium also powers their spaceships and laser guns and is able to repair nerve cells and heal any injury. It can also cure cancer, solve world hunger and is the world’s greatest crop fertilizer. That last three things aren’t in the movie, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the sequel covered it.

But despite being this advanced, Wakanda is an isolationist, authoritarian country, ruled by an absolute monarch, also known as the Black Panther, who has total and complete control over the country’s resources and military. The Black Panther is handed down through bloodline but anyone from a noble family can challenge the current Black Panther for control of the country through trial by combat. This mix of old school tradition and new school technology gives “Black Panther” a unique and interesting aesthetic throughout the entire movie which is seen in its scenery and its music scores. Combining beautiful African landscapes and technologically advanced skyscrapers provide the overtone for the entire movie and help to enhance the movie’s overall theme of tradition vs. progress.
